It Starts At The Root
From the moment we are born, we start to separate from the deepest truth of who we are. And we spend our lives trying to reconnect. If life starts out without a strong foundation, or at some point we begin to feel like we are not accepted, or supported, those events stay with us. Our childhood experiences are still present in our lives today.
As our cells and organs begin to develop in utero, our chakras also begin to take shape. The Root Chakra is where life begins. It stores the energy of our personal identities, who we are in the world, our sense of belonging, and connection to our tribal (family) beliefs.
Just as a healthy flower or plant grows from a seed, the more it is nurtured, the healthier it becomes… the same is said for human beings. It starts at the root. We are provided with support and foundation through relationships, but when that support is no longer there, we begin to feel unstable, unsupported, and unloved.
Root Chakra meditation
Find a quiet place and focus your attention on your breath. Breathe in, breathe out. Become aware of the effects that gravity has on your body. Feel a pleasant heaviness come over you as you feel the stability and stillness that is grounding and supporting you.
Feel the earth below you and know that it’s abundant energy holds you, surrounds you, and nourishes you. Whenever you are in need of support return to nature, to restore and renew. Take another deep breath in and draw this energy up from the earth’s roots, pulling it in through the soles of your feet, all the way up through your legs, your abdomen, chest, neck, all the way up through your entire body until you can feel that breath expand and release through the top of your head.
See yourself sitting with your back against a tree.
Feel the energy of the tree as it enters your body aligning your back, your spine with structure, strength. Imagine your hands running along the roots of the tree and allow yourself to feel rooted into the earth.
Take a deep breath in and think about the characteristics and wisdom of this tree… its strength, flexibility, ability to simultaneously stay grounded and see things from a higher perspective. Allow yourself to connect with the tree as you bring awareness to your root chakra. (The root chakra emanates 3-4 inches from the physical body near the sacrum).
What can the tree teach you…. In a storm, the trees that bend, don’t break. Its deep roots keep it grounded, steady and strong. How do you handle the storms in your life?
As you sit with the tree, feel yourself being nourished, and supported. Ask the tree if it has a message for you. With each inhalation take in what you need from the tree and with each exhalation let out gratitude. Breathe in support, strength, whatever your life needs right now, and breathe out gratitude.
When you are ready open your eyes and slowly come back into the room
